Winter Aconite

Screen Shot 2016-03-08 at 4.28.22 PMOne of the first flowers to emerge in late winter is Eranthis hyemalis, commonly called “Winter Aconite”. Their bright yellow flowers and jester collared leaves are one of the first signs at Weir Farm National Historic Site that Spring is on its way!

Screen Shot 2016-03-08 at 4.28.07 PMIt is a very hardy plant growing well in Zones 4-7. Winter Aconite can tolerate more moisture in the spring and summer months, unlike other spring flowering bulbs that need to be in drier soils during dormancy. It is a plant that with little effort will spread slowly over time.

Galanthus, “Snowdrops” are found blooming with our Aconite, and seem to complement each other quite well!
